Crocheting a Retro Inspired Hat

True to my love affair with all things retro and vintage I finished a retro inspired hat for myself last week.  Usually I don't like to wear hats...they always feel like they are either squeezing my head or they make me really hot.  I found this pattern on Ravelry and I thought it would be perfect because it had some holes in the stitch pattern.

The original pattern can be found here: http://www.joyfulabode.com/2007/06/22/blue-star-cloche/

I decided to write it out on my blog hopping that if anyone wanted to make it, I could make the pattern instructions a little easier to understand for someone who is a beginner. :)
The hat looks like it bumps out a bit on the sides because of how I have my hair pinned back, it fits nice and is not too loose or too tight.  Perfect kinda fit for someone who just wants a cute hat that does not "hug" your head too much. ;)

Joyful Abode's Blue Star Cloche
{not my personal pattern}

5.00 mm hook
1 ball of worsted weight yarn {I used Caron Simply Soft Eco Yarn}

Let's Get Started!

ch 3 and join with a slip stitch into the first chain that you did to make a circle

Round 1
ch 3 {counts as your first dc}, dc, ch 2   That was your first pattern stitch of the round
Work four more pattern stitches into the circle
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Round 2
ch 5 {counts as your first dc and a ch 2}
Work 2 pattern stitches into the first ch space and the next 4 ch spaces
In the last space you will work 1 pattern stitch and then 1 dc
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Round 4

1 pattern stitch in the next ch space
1 double crochet in the last ch space
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Round 5
ch 3 {counts as your first dc}

1 pattern stitch in the next 4 ch spaces
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Check your Gauge!!
Joyful Abode says that right now you should have a wobbly looking shape that is about 6 inches across with 24 ch spaces.  Hopefully you do :)  If not you will have to start over again, possibly changing out your hook if need be to get the right gauge.

Round 6
ch 5 {counts as your first dc and a ch 2}
1 pattern stitch in each of the next 23 ch spaces
dc in the last ch space
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Round 7
ch 3 {counts as your first dc}
1 dc, ch 2 in that first ch space
1 pattern stitch in each of the next 23 spaces
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Rounds 8 -15
Repeat rounds 6 & 7

Round 16 {shell boarder}
ch 3 {counts as a dc for the last shell}
sc in between the first 2 double crochets
*7 dc in between the next 2 double crochets, sc in between the next 2 double crochets*
Repeat from * to * around
6 dc in between the last 2 double crochet
join with a slip stitch into the ch 3 space of the beginning ch 3 of the round

Finish off your ends and weave them in and you are finished! :)

I love this hat...I think I may have said that already, if not, now you know. :)

When I have some more time I want to make a couple more of  these in different colors and would love to size this down so that Victoria can have one too.

This hat works up really quick, it can def be done in one day if you have a few hours to work on it or in a weekend.  I finished mine over the course of a few days while watching reruns of NCIS, love that show! :)

I am thinking these too would be great gift ideas, they work up so quick and depending on the yarn you use they can be worn during different season.  Use a light weight bamboo blend for the spring/early summer/late fall and a thicker yarn for the cooler months.

This week's crochet posts:
Valentines necklace with matching American Girl Necklace {my free pattern}
Stars and Hearts Banners {free pattern}
Crochet headband with shells that you can weave ribbon into {my free pattern}
{sneak peak}

I have a couple more posts planned that I hope to get done as well that are not crochet related.  Hoping that I will have time with the busy week coming up.  :)
